I’ve tried surfing many times now at different surfing spots — Siargao and La Union. But it doesn’t mean that we are really good at it. We still get wiped out — even pros do. Excitement is all over us and I just wanted to surf immediately. Why? Because this time, I’m surfing the waves of Baler.
When I checked out Sabang Beach, it has a grey-ish or black-ish sand compared to Siargao, which is rocky while La Union has a white sand. There were many people surfing already while others are just beach bumming. The best part of it? There were really huge waves which I haven’t seen in Siargao yet.
Of course Siargao and La Union has big waves also but it will depend on the season. And since we visited Baler during a surfing season then it’s so perfect! Best time to visit Baler is from October to February where you can enjoy big swells.
On my first day, the instructor taught me the basics (as usual). But then my instructor was so perfectionist that he wants me to follow all his instructions like how to stand up, how far my feet from each other should be and I really hated it. That made my ride so effin’ ugly and got me wiped out. Why not just leave me alone on what I’m comfortable with? Anyhow, I still have 2nd day to surf.
Look at how big the waves are and compare it to the 2 surfers at the right.
On my second day, I enjoyed the waves so much that two hours felt like just 30 minutes. I also had a great instructor who taught me how to duck dive and let me paddle all throughout the big waves. He even invited me to come back next time, bring a hammock, and stay with them so they can teach us more techniques.
